Golf swing tips # 1 – How to grip a golf club

Learning how to grip a golf club is one of the most important golf fundamentals you need to learn in golf. The proper golf grip will give you the best chance to create a powerful golf swing that will let you hit the ball straight and far down the fairway. There are 3 common grips that are used. They are the overlap grip, interlock grip, and 10 finger grip (baseball bat grip) . I recommend to use either the overlap grip or the interlock grip. These will allow your hands to work together as one unit which is key. Lets take a look at how to grip a golf club.

Now that you know the different grips, lets go over how to grip a golf club correctly. This will ensure that you have the correct golf grip and set you up to be able to swing the golf club properly. Follow the steps below to create a good golf grip.

 Golf Grip Setup

When gripping the golf club let the grip sit more in the fingers rather than the palms of your hands. You should see your first two knuckles in your lead hand (top hand on grip) with your thumb pointing down the shaft. This will create a V between your forefinger and thumb. The V should point to your right shoulder. Your right hand life line should cover your lead hand thumb and the V of your right hand should also point to your right shoulder. This grip will allow your wrists to properly rotate throughout the golf swing.

The pressure in which you hold the golf grip is equally important. Too tight of a grip will restrict your wrist movement and to light of a grip and you might loose your club. Imagine the grip as a tube of toothpaste. You want to hold it just tight enough that you do not squeeze any toothpaste out but have a firm grip on it. Your grip pressure should remain constant through your golf swing. Now that you have learned how to grip a golf club lets move on to golf swing tips # 2
